Types of Printing & Packaging Finishes Ritter’s Specializes In
Ultimately, attractive packagingis vital for sales, so learning about different finishes and effects can help take your packaging to the next level.
Some of the packaging and printing finishes we offer include:
Gloss Ultraviolet (UV) Coating
As one of the most popular coatings, it offers a clear sheen coating with a high gloss that serves as a protectant. UV coatings are rub-resistant.
Gloss UV coating is perfect for products like boxes, postcards, direct mailers, business cards, hand-outs, catalogs, presentation folders, or really any product that could benefit from a dramatic glossy look.
Spot UV
This printing finish places a clear polymer coating over a logo or specific areas of artwork to make it glossy and to furthermore draw attention to it.
Spot UV works brilliantly for packages, brochure covers, and business cards.
Pearlescent & Glitter Coatings
A pearlescent coating offers a shimmer effect with a less dramatic effect than a glitter coating. Glitter coatings come in different colors and are made with large glitter particles in their UV gloss coatings.
Both pearlescent and glitter coatings can be added to a broad range of printed media materials from boxes to magazines. During holiday seasons, glitter is a popular choice among consumers, especially for greeting cards and festive packaging.
Varnishes
In terms of printing and packaging finishes, varnishes offer a protectant to the packaging.
Soft Touch Coating
A smooth but velvet-like feel is from a Soft Touch coating. This makes the packaging look softer than one that has a textured or high-gloss coating. It’s applied as part of the printing process and aids in quicker drying times
This type of coating pairs well with greeting cards, books, paperboard cartons, product fact sheets, brochures, and many other forms of marketing collateral, and direct mail.
Metallic Papers
These packaging substrates are shiny and bold. They have a metallic surface like gold, silver, copper, iridescence, or even a holographic shimmer. For those that are interested in a foil stamp look across the entire surface, this finish has the flexibility to do that and more. Standard inks are semi-transparent and will allow the metallic effect to enhance the colors that you wish to highlight. Apply an opaque white ink to areas where you don’t want the metallic finish to show through. Non-printed areas leave the full metallic finish exposed for that foil stamped look.
Metallic sheen works great for packages, business cards, greeting cards, logos, direct mail, brochures, hand-outs, and any other product that could benefit from a metal ‘pop’.
Grit & Sandpaper Coatings
Grit coating is a coarse effect that offers a non-slip surface and grip, which is great for multi-use packaging. Sandpaper coatings give a rougher texture than grit. With both coating applications, the texture can be controlled by the size of the billion cubic micron rollers used. The smaller the BC rating, the less amount of coating it will give to the packaging.
Grit and sandpaper coatings work well for multi-use packages, product fact sheets, and greeting cards.
