In the now-crowded space for electrolyte and flavored drink mixes on the shelves, the drink manufacturers are upping their game in an effort to be noticed.
Let’s take a look at a few samples I recently bought to see what makes the packaging so special.
DripDrop
The DripDrop folding carton was 2.5” x 5.75” x 1.5”. Nice deep blue background with a splash of color on the flavor packets and the product itself being shown added to water. DripDrop used a lighter blue color to highlight part of the logo and select words all over the box.
Special features included the logo at the top front of the box which was embossed and gloss coating on a few words and images on the front. DripDrop used the carton to its full advantage, using the top, bottom, and even the inside flaps to convey more information to the consumer.
They included a full color photo of their founder helping treat children on a relief mission and included material about signs of dehydration and how their patented formula works. The Public Benefit Corporation was founded to treat and prevent dehydration on relief missions and they donated over 2 million servings in 2022.
Waterdrop
Waterdrop naturally flavored drink cubes used an usual box for their sustainable packaging. Overall, the carton was 3.5” x 3.5” x 1”. The box consisted of two pieces: the outer sleeve that slipped over the inner carton which held the product.
The outer sleeve was printed in full color and included a diecut on the top of the box. The interior box was printed in black ink only and the top where the diecut was, they included the word “Push” so the consumer would know if you pushed that area, the box would slide apart.
This package was for Blackcurrant/Elderflower/Acai so the lavender coloring suited the flavor perfectly. The outer package included nutrition facts, an explanation of what is waterdrop, and features (sugar-free, low-calorie, and vitamins included). The inner carton had a small amount of printing but the most impactful print was on the inside where Waterdrop touts their package saves up to 98% plastic and C02. Waterdrop collects one plastic bottle from the environment and gives it a new life for each package purchased.
Prime
Prime Hydration+ box was beautiful! The carton was 3” x 6” x 1.25”. It was printed in a vivid blue with black ink with a little bit reverse white. The shape of the box (wider than its competitors) and the bold printing made it really stand out on the shelf. The box was printed with a soft touch coating so felt very luxurious.
Prime Hydration also included a perforation around the entire box so the end-user could just pull off the top of the box and then have easy access to the product. Yes, it was only printed in two colors but it made quite a statement and I loved the simplistic design.
LMNT
I actually ordered LMNT online and the unboxing experience was great! It arrived in a corrugated box printed black with the company name reversed in white. Inside the packing box, it was printed in black and with white reversed text that said “What’s all the salt about” on top, and inside the box was printed black with text in gray that said, “stay salty”. Very attractive design.
Inside was a 12-stick variety pack that I paid for and a few free samples in a smaller envelope. The 12-pack box was a custom size: 5.5” x 5.5” x 2”. The top had a diecut slit so it closed like a purse. The sides had perforations to help make it close. It was printed in full color with spot gloss uv on the photos of the packets and also the words “Stay Salty” were in spot uv. The flavors were listed at the bottom and were printed in a corresponding ink color, the same color as the flavor packets were printed. The sample packet was a 6.5” x 6.5” envelope with a zip-opening. The envelope was printed in a black solid, minus the company name and a few words.
Inside were the packets along with a 5” x 5” card, printed on cardstock in full color. One side told the founding story of LMNT and the other side illustrated how to stay salty. A Salt Dealer sticker was included as well as a 16 page booklet (4.25” x 4.25”) which was printed full-color on cardstock and included information about hydration, a scientific graph, photos, and recipes using the flavored salt packets. LMNT did a great job of providing engaging materials to the end user.
The Prime box stood out the most on the store shelf because of the size of the box and the striking colors. The Waterdrop box was a nice square size and while smaller than the others, it is a handy size to tuck in a purse or backpack for on-the-go. LMNT provided the most material to the client – both education and fun (the sticker). The takeaway is that each company should stay true to its values and goals and engage with their clients in a manner that works best for them.
