Taking steps to preserve our environment is now more essential than ever and people are trying to incorporate such awareness into their daily lives and business practices. This includes products that feature eco-friendly packaging and the importance of taking an eco-friendly approach when it comes to packaging.
This has been seen in the rise of kraft paper being incorporated into packaging options, mainly due to its versatility as well as its eco-friendly characteristics. Kraft paper has become the preferred eco-friendly packaging option for many businesses. What process is undertaken to produce such a product? What are the benefits of kraft paper? How can you use this eco-friendly packaging option?
Our blog post below explains all of this and more.
How is kraft paper made?
Originating in 1879 and aptly named after the German word meaning strong, kraft paper is made up of 80% sulphate wood pulp. As a result, it is exceptionally strong and durable making it the perfect material for packaging. The brown color of kraft paper is due to the natural unbleached product stemming from the wood pulp.
The simplified process involves wood being converted into wood pulp and then being turned into paper. The process of creating kraft paper starts with cooking wood chips in a chemical composition of sodium and sodium hydroxide. This breaks down the fibers and separates them from the cellulose – a key process in creating this product. Larger, unsuitable pieces are then filtered out and the remanding pulp is made into paper.
The strength of the paper is attributed to the fact that not all the lignin in the wood is entirely removed during the cooking process. With the remains of the lignin along with sulphur, kraft paper takes on a sturdier form.
What are the benefits of kraft paper?
When it comes to packaging, here’s why you should consider kraft paper.
Environmentally friendly
Using fewer chemicals in comparison to the process that occurs to produce regular paper, kraft paper is more sustainable.
The range of wood available to create kraft paper is greater than other papers. Having the flexibility to utilize bamboo or pine as the source is a substantial benefit.
Durability
Kraft paper is one of the stronger packaging options available because of the way it is made.
Presentation
Today, consumers are requesting environmentally friendly options, and kraft paper packaging offers them exactly that.
