Recently a client sent us a lovely gift of gourmet cupcakes as a thank you. Why am I writing about it? Because it was so visually appealing and full of great ideas that I couldn’t wait to share these inspiring ideas with you. Let’s take a closer look at Baked by Melissa’s packaging.
Baked by Melissa’s thoughtful packaging
The box was enclosed in a white belly band which said “Thank You” in big, bold letters and was diecut around the letters. The band was 3.25” wide. On the end of the band was an image of a cupcake and the words “Baked by Melissa” in gold foil. Wow! What a great way to make the belly band stand out and include branding at the same time. Most belly bands are just a straight cut so diecutting it really made it stand out. The band was printed on 100# gloss cover and was sturdy enough to keep the box from opening.
Once I opened the box, I could see the real prize: the cupcakes and they were delicious! The cupcakes were nested in a clear plastic container which had another 1 7/8” wide belly band around it. This interior band had a full color image of a cupcake and Baked by Melissa in the center and also included storage instructions and a QR code that took the user to Baked by Melissa’s website. The band was printed on 100# gloss text and was laminated with a thin gloss film on one side to add strength.
Tucked under the interior belly band were several cards, all printed in full color on 100# gloss cover. One card said “It’s the little things in life” with a cupcake logo and the company name. The reverse side held the note from our client. Another card was 2.75” x 3.75” and on one side it mentioned the Flavor of the Month along with a mouth-watering photo of that cupcake. The back side was a note from Melissa that told about that flavor – in this instance, the flavor was Chocolate Chip Banana Bread and Melissa wrote about how her Mom used to make it when she was growing up and that the flavor was formulated for her. What a great way to tell a story and connect with clients. Baked by Melissa also had a photo of the cupcake sliced in half and then pointed out the different layers of the cupcake. Great attention to detail and another way to connect with the consumer.
The last card showcased Melissa’s offerings and names and photos of each cupcake that was included in each type of package. We received the “Latest and Greatest” so it was nice to match the image to the actual cupcake. Other offerings included “Spring Fling”, “Best Mom Ever” (Mother’s Day was after we received the cupcakes), Vegan, Gluten Free and more. They also included product information, contact information and a QR code to find your favorite cupcake.
Why did this make such an impression on me? For one, it looked professional – loads of photos and helpful descriptions and an impactful use of color. Two, the postcards and belly bands are a relatively low-cost way to interact even more with your clients and are easy to design and print. Three, the diecutting of the outer belly band was the pinnacle of making me feel thanked. Yes, the diecutting costs extra but the “wow” factor is priceless. Last, the brand Baked by Melissa showed its personality and I was eager to learn more about them.
Baked by Melissa did a superb job of visually showcasing their products and thanking us for consuming them. Hope this review gives you some inspiration to elevate your next package.
