Whether you shop in a store or online, you may agree that cosmetic packaging is some of the most colorful packaging on the market. Let’s take a look at some cosmetic packaging and see how companies utilize color.
Tarte
Tarte’s Big Ego mascara straight tuck folding carton is 5” x 1 1/8” x 7/8”. What stands out most is the neon pink printing on the box. It is very bright and screams “look at me”. Tarte printed using full color which helps illustrate the effectiveness of a photo showing an eye before and after using the mascara. Additionally, there is gold foil on the front and back sides of the box, circling the photos of eyelashes with this mascara and the words Big Ego and tarte. The inside is also printed in pink and includes a partition meant to hold the tube of mascara in place. The top of this box is printed a solid black and the word “black” is reversed out in white. The color indication makes it easy for the consumer to find the correct shade on the shelf.

Mitchell and Peach
English brand Mitchell and Peach oozes luxury with their straight tuck 5” x 1 7/8” x 1 7/8” folding carton. Mitchell and Peach printed the entire sheet in silver ink, except the barcode area on the bottom of the box. The paper itself was a linen finish and coupled with gold and silver foil on the front, looked sophisticated. Lending further to the elegance, the company name and product was printed in a bold black ink and debossed. The debossing indented the text on the face of the carton and is not as common as embossing. The entire combination of silver background, foils and debossing show a high degree of refinement.
Kopari
Kopari’s Star Bright Vitamin C Moisturizer reverse tuck folding carton is 5 1/8” x 1 5/8” x 1 5/8”. They printed in full color with most of the box printing in lime and a very light green, almost a beige. The accompanying text is printed in teal. The contrast between the lime and much lighter green is attractive and complimentary. Kopari enhanced the package by adding a teal foil on the front of the box – the company name and product information. On the bottom of the box, their website was also foiled. Their logo was embossed and foiled on the top of the box. The color and foil combination is very soothing and looks great.
Benefit Cosmetics
Benefit Cosmetics Good Cleanup pore-purifying foaming cleanser reverse tuck box is 6 ¾” x 1 7/8” x 1 7/8”. The primary printed color is a deep yellow which I find to be memorable. There is a large swatch of silver printed on the front. One distinguishing feature is a repeating pattern of circles on the front and back panels of the box. The inside of the box is printed in pink and the phrase “Laughter is the best cosmetic” is on the inside flap. One interesting feature is that the features and directions were printing in English and French!
Aavrani
First thing I noticed about this attractive box was that the carton was printed on a thicker 24 pt. board, while most other cosmetic boxes are printed on 18 pt. board. The paper feels substantial. Aavrani’s Hair Scalp Recovery Oil is printed in a beautiful shade of blue with an abstract image on the side of a woman with a large hairdo. They also added a soft touch coating so the folding carton felt luxurious. The overall size of the reverse tuck carton is 4.5” x 1.5” x 1.75”.
SLEEK’E
Silke Hair Serum from SLEEK’E comes in a 5” x 1.5” X 1.5” reverse tuck folding carton. The interesting thing about this package is that the paper is a metalized holographic board. The front and back panels were printed in a white background with a reverse of the word “Silk’e” so it had the effect of foil. On the two sides, SLEEK’E used gradients to mimic the appearance of a different shade of foil. Using the holographic paper is an alternative to using a white board and adding foil. This method allows for a whole box look rather than just a small section of foil.
Great cosmetic packaging is more than a protective box, it’s a silent salesperson on the shelf. Whether you lean toward holographic flair or understated foil, the right color palette and finishing touches can tell your brand story in seconds. Let these six examples spark ideas for packaging that attracts eyes and converts buyers.
